Residence Permit Application Guide in Turkey: Types, Documents and Process

A residence permit is required to legally stay in Turkey for periods exceeding 90 days. Anyone who is not a Turkish citizen and plans to stay in the country for an extended period must submit this application. With the right documents and timing, the process is very manageable; however, applying for the wrong type or submitting incomplete paperwork can cause serious problems.

Types of Residence Permit

  • Short-Term Residence Permit: Suitable for property owners, investors, tourism or education-related stays. Valid for up to 2 years and renewable.
  • Family Residence Permit: Issued to the foreign spouse or children of a Turkish citizen or a foreigner with a valid residence permit.
  • Student Residence Permit: Granted to foreign students enrolled in a higher education institution in Turkey.
  • Long-Term Residence Permit: A permanent residence right granted to foreigners who have legally resided in Turkey for 8 consecutive years, have social security and present no public order concerns.
  • Humanitarian Residence Permit: Applied as an administrative protection measure to foreigners who cannot be deported or voluntarily leave.

Before You Apply

The application must be submitted before your visa or existing residence permit expires. Those who benefit from visa-free entry must book an appointment through the e-residence system within 10 days of arrival.

Required Documents (for Short-Term)

  • Completed and signed residence permit application form
  • 4 biometric photographs
  • Copy of valid passport or travel document (all pages)
  • Proof of sufficient financial resources (bank statement, payslip, etc.)
  • Proof of address (title deed, lease agreement, notarised landlord undertaking)
  • Health insurance valid in Turkey
  • Receipt for residence permit fee and card fee

The e-Residence Application Process

  1. Log in at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr and fill in the application form.
  2. Book an appointment at the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management.
  3. Bring all your documents on the appointment date; officials will record your biometric data.
  4. If approved, the residence permit card is sent to your address by post.

After Your Application

Card delivery typically takes 30-90 days. Until the card arrives, your application documents serve as a valid residence document. It is advisable to carry your passport and application documents with you.

Extension and Renewal

You may apply for a renewal 60 days before your permit expires. Failing to apply before expiry constitutes a legal violation and may result in an administrative fine.
