Residence Permit Extension

Smooth extension of your existing residence permit before expiry — appointment, document review and full follow-up.

Residence Permit Extension

Under Article 22 of Law No. 6458 on Foreigners and International Protection, you can apply to extend your residence permit up to 60 days before it expires. Applications left to the final days carry real risks: the appointment system may be fully booked in your province, minor document gaps may surface too late, and overstays trigger administrative fines and potential entry bans. Demirel Consultancy plans your extension on time, builds the file with the correct documents and submits it to the Migration Office in a way that succeeds on the first try.

When should I apply?

The rule is simple: the extension window opens 60 days before the expiry date printed on your card and closes on the expiry date itself. The ideal timing is to book the e-İkamet appointment 45-55 days before expiry and prepare all documents before the appointment day. Applications squeezed into the final 10 days often run into closed appointment slots in your province, forcing you to travel to a neighbouring city.

What we do for your extension

  1. Assessment of your current permit: We review the card type (short-term, family, student, work-exempt), the reason for stay and the registered address.
  2. Opening the e-İkamet application: We log into goc.gov.tr with your foreign ID number, complete the extension form and book the Provincial Migration Office appointment.
  3. Building the document pack: Address declaration, health insurance, proof of income, passport copy and biometric photos are updated and filed.
  4. Appointment day: Documents are handed to the migration officer, fingerprints and signature are taken and the unique application reference is issued.
  5. Decision and card tracking: Once approved, the card is dispatched via PTT to your address; we monitor the shipment and confirm delivery.

Required documents

  • Valid passport (must remain valid for at least 60 days beyond the new permit period)
  • Copy of the current residence card
  • 4 biometric photos (taken within the last 6 months)
  • Address declaration: title deed, notarised tenancy agreement or dormitory certificate
  • Valid private health insurance covering the new permit period
  • Proof of sufficient and regular income (bank statement, payroll slip or affidavit)
  • Receipts for permit fee and card fee payments
  • Application form (completed and printed from e-İkamet)

Extension durations

A short-term residence permit is first granted for up to 2 years. On extension, the administration may issue a new card for 1, 2 or 3 years depending on the reason for stay. Foreigners who have completed 8 years in Turkey can also apply for a long-term residence permit, which grants indefinite right of stay.

Expired residence permit

If your permit has already expired and you are still in Turkey, do not panic — there is a solution. We analyse your situation, calculate the administrative fine based on the days of overstay and build the strategy to apply for a new short-term permit after the fine is paid. With fast action, we can in most cases avoid triggering the V-77 entry ban code that kicks in for overstays beyond 10 days.

Common mistakes

  • Applying in the last week — appointment slots are usually gone
  • Health insurance covering only the old permit period
  • Failing to register a change of address within 20 business days
  • Passport valid only 1-2 months beyond the new permit
  • Insufficient income proof (below 3× monthly minimum wage)
  • Card sent to the old address and returned by PTT
