How to Get a Work Permit in Turkey? Types, Requirements and Application Process
Foreign nationals who want to work in Turkey must obtain a work permit, either from abroad or domestically. Working without a work permit leads to serious administrative and criminal sanctions for both the worker and the employer. With correctly prepared documents and timely application, the process can proceed smoothly — but the bureaucratic steps require attention and care.
Types of Work Permit
Fixed-Term Work Permit
The most commonly used type. Valid for a maximum of 1 year on the first application. With the same employer, the first renewal grants 2 years and the second renewal grants 3 years. Working outside this permit is not allowed; a new application is required for a change of employer.
Indefinite Work Permit
Granted to foreigners who have at least 8 years of legal work history in Turkey. Provides the freedom to work without employer or profession restrictions.
Independent Work Permit
A special permit type for foreigners who want to be self-employed. Professional qualification and specific education requirements apply; additional restrictions exist for some professions.
Application Requirements
Both the employer and the worker must prepare documents for a work permit application.
Documents from the Employer
- Signed employment contract
- Tax registration and commercial registry
- Financial statements for the last year (balance sheet, income statement)
- SGK (Social Security Institution) workplace registration certificate
Documents from the Foreign Worker
- Passport copy (all pages)
- Diploma or equivalence certificate (apostilled and translated)
- Professional qualification certificate if applicable
- Biometric photograph
How Long Does the Process Take?
The Work Permit General Directorate typically makes a decision within 30 days for complete applications. If documents are missing, additional time is granted, which may extend the total waiting period.
Work Permit Renewal
A renewal application must be submitted at least 60 days before the permit expires. Working with an expired permit is a legal violation and leads to an administrative fine.
