How to Get a Schengen Visa? Application Process and Key Points

The Schengen Area covers 27 European countries and allows travel with a single visa. Turkish passport holders need a Schengen visa to visit most European countries, but the application process involves many careful steps and even minor mistakes can result in a refusal.

Types of Schengen Visa

  • Type C (Short Stay) Visa: Allows up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Used for tourism, family visits and business travel.
  • Type D (Long Stay) Visa: Required for stays exceeding 90 days in a specific country. Applied for study or work purposes.

Which Embassy to Apply To?

You must apply to the embassy of your main destination country. If visiting multiple countries, the one where you spend the most time is the main destination. If time is equal, the first country of entry takes jurisdiction.

Required Documents

  • Biometric passport issued within the last 10 years with at least 3 months of remaining validity
  • Fully completed and signed Schengen visa application form
  • Recent biometric photograph (taken within the last 6 months)
  • Round-trip flight reservation (a confirmed reservation is enough — purchase is not required)
  • Accommodation proof (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Sufficient financial means: bank statements showing at least €50–100 per person per day (last 3 months)
  • Travel health insurance (minimum €30,000 coverage, valid for all Schengen countries)
  • If employed: employer letter, payslips and leave approval
  • If self-employed: tax registration, commercial registry and financial statements
  • If a student: enrolment certificate and parental/scholarship letter of support

Application Steps

  1. Book an appointment. Schedule via the embassy website or a visa centre such as VFS/TLS. Slots fill up weeks in advance during busy periods.
  2. Prepare documents. Have both originals and copies. Organise them in the order requested by the embassy.
  3. Submit your application. Biometric data (fingerprints and photo) is taken; the visa fee is paid in cash or by card.
  4. Track the process. VFS/TLS centres usually offer online tracking. A decision is typically issued within 15 calendar days.
  5. Collect your passport. Once approved, you can collect your passport in person or have it couriered.

Why Are Applications Refused?

The most common grounds for refusal are:

  • Incomplete or inconsistent documents
  • Insufficient financial means
  • Discrepancies between the stated travel purpose and supporting documents
  • Previous Schengen violations (overstay, etc.)
  • Missing travel insurance

Appealing a Refusal

A refusal can generally be appealed within 30 days of notification through the relevant embassy or visa centre. The appeal must concretely address why the shortcoming has been remedied or why the decision is wrong. Demirel Consultancy also assists with post-refusal file analysis and appeal letter preparation.
